Designing for small screens

In a couple of weeks we are having Joost from Demonsters guest lecture on the process of creating a phone app. Getting ready from this we are spending a couple of weeks looking at design for small screen, and we have a brief to create the visuals for an app between now and then. However as an exercise to get us thinking in terms of designing for a small screen we have analysed apps and then were given an image, a logo, a list of buttons to include and told to include a search bar in the app.

I sketched a few layouts and I have, so far, created two of them which are below.

When the image is tapped the Navigational elements disappearĀ  allowing the user to see the image properly.

Just a slightly different layout that I worked on. I don’t think I like this one as much.
